Brainspotting approach

Embracing the Unknown in Brainspotting

Many therapeutic approaches rely on what the therapist knows. However, especially in cases of complex or developmental trauma, we often know very little about the best ways to address these issues. Why then do we depend so heavily on that small fraction of knowledge? It’s time to shift our perspective and embrace the dynamic uncertainty and not-knowing as our starting point.

Brainspotting operates from this premise, offering you a framework within which you can explore and process your experiences. It adopts a bottom-up approach that focuses on the process itself, rather than a top-down method following a predetermined plan.

This method is grounded in the belief that you are the foremost expert on your own trauma. Your body holds the memories of what happened, how it felt, and what is needed for healing. The therapist’s role is to guide and support you through your journey, but the responsibility and control remain with you.

Key elements of this approach include:

  • Welcoming individuals without prior judgment or assessment
  • Trusting the innate intelligence of each person’s system
  • Providing a safe and attuned space through presence and curiosity
  • Offering minimal structure to facilitate inward exploration
  • Allowing your experience to lead, with minimal interference
  • Taking the necessary time, recognizing that the body processes at its own pace
  • Integrating experiences post-session, when appropriate
  • Helping the analytical mind understand and make sense of the process afterward

The Therapist’s Stance

Healing from developmental trauma occurs within relationships. Therefore, the therapist’s stance and attunement significantly influence the effectiveness of the treatment. Essential qualities include presence, holding space, trust, empathy, patience, slowing down, and surrender.

Brainspotting is a relational technique that requires the therapist to be fully present, allowing the client to feel safe and supported in exploring deeper emotions. As Brainspotting founder David Grand, PhD, states: “It’s not in the doing but in the being” and “The power of what we do lies in attunement and our presence.”

In-Person vs. Online Brainspotting Sessions

Brainspotting has proven to be just as effective in online sessions as in-person ones. Many clients report little to no difference between virtual and face-to-face sessions. Additionally, online sessions allow you to stay in your familiar environment and eliminate travel time.

The key elements—slowing down, attunement, and presence—are just as achievable online. As you move beyond cognitive thinking and into feeling, the screen becomes less of a barrier. You experience connection and presence, which are essential in Brainspotting, as it is a relational technique.
